Yang Mushi’s installation Grinding is currently on show at the White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale. This artwork is comprised of lacquered wooden pieces laid upon a reflective metal plate. Requiring the hand-cutting, shaping and sanding of hundreds of objects to create this dark tableau, the artist calls this an exercise in ‘insanity’ undertook as a way to examine his place in ‘a larger insanity: Chinese society’. The neatly arranged shapes speak of isolation, anger, pointless rules and grinding toil, yet for all its hard edges and barbaric spikes, there exists an air of harmony about this piece making it my favourite of the current exhibition.
