Over one weekend each year, Sydney Open unlocks the doors of more than 60 of the city’s most important and intriguing buildings. Run by Sydney Living Museums, this event provides attendees with access to buildings both old and new. This year, we visited only six of the 60, picking out those that piqued our interest. These included the State Library with its new wing, 50 Martin Place—the Commonwealth Bank’s money box building—repurposed with stunning effect for Macquarie, Hong Kong House, engineering giant ARUP’s new HQ, Grimshaw architects new offices at 333 George and the surprisingly exciting museum in the Reserve Bank of Australia. Sydney Open is a great event and one we recommend as it highlights the outstanding design that exists in this city.
