Style Rider aims to document the world’s most stylish motorcycle riders, be they riders of classic, custom or cafe racer steeds. Focused on the intersection of motorcycle culture with individual style, here we speak to Mutt Motorcycles Australia owner Timothy Waring about simple, classic clothes and customising your ride.
Name: Timothy Waring
Residence: Sydney, Australia
Occupation: Owner/Mutt Motorcycles Australia
Instagram: @_timotei_
Today’s ride: Mutt GT-SS 250
Describe your style: Simple and classic. Day to day, I live in workwear; Carhartt dungarees and sheepskin jackets. For special occasions, I love traditional tailoring and had this suit made for the Gentleman’s Ride.
Favourite items: This suit from @Montagiocustomtailoring and my black Redwing Iron Rangers. I heard once that all you need in life is a good bed and a decent pair of shoes as if you’re not in one, you’re in the other.
Next purchase: 1969 Genny Shovel. Frisco style, clean and skinny.
Style inspiration: Steve McQueen and Peaky Blinders.
Best local ride: West Head, Ku Ring Gai National Park at the northern edge of Sydney. Great riding through the forest and so close to the city.
Best distance ride: Old Pacific Highway to the Central Coast. Great roads and I get to visit my brother and his family. Can’t beat it.
Tip for stylish motorcycle riding: When buying Moto gear, you need to feel good when riding in your protective gear. If you can get up in the morning and put on a pair of jeans or jacket without thinking twice about it, you’re on to a winner. I always ask myself when stocking our shop, would I wear this down the pub? If it’s a no, it ain’t coming in.
Next motorcycle trip: Back to the UK, from Devon to the Lake District. Beautiful roads and lovely countryside; if you get the weather right.
Why do you like riding? It’s the closest thing to flying without leaving the ground. I was fortunate to be given a chance to ride and race at a young age. I have never lost that feeling after 28 odd years, and I urge everyone to get out and give it ago.
