Today’s ride: Stock 2005 Triumph Bonneville 790cc. It’s old school without needing to be a mechanic. I previously had a 1973 Triumph Tiger and had to carry tools in my jacket at all times.
Describe your style: It’s called ‘Vintage’ or ‘Classic’ now, but early seventies motorcycles and gear are it for me; or at least, the slightly more modern version thereof. Jackson’s Monza leather jacket, Saint waxed cotton jeans, Gasolina Dapper lace-up boots (custom made in Mexico and available online), Jackson ‘roo skin gloves, AGV open face helmet with Halcyon goggles, or Bell Bullitt full face and Quay sunglasses.
Favourite items: The Triumph’s analogue speedo. I love the way the little numbers on the odometer slowly click over as I ride.
Next purchase: Lewis Leathers Lightning 392 jacket.
Style icon/inspiration: John Cooper Clarke is my sartorial god, but I suspect he’s never been anywhere near a motorcycle. Peter Fonda’s sunglasses and Paul Simonon’s leather jacket are up there in my motorcycle world.
Best local ride: NSW Central Coast to Jerry’s Cafe in Kulnura (Lower Hunter Valley), or to Pie In The Sky on the Old Pacific Highway.
Best distance ride: NSW Central Coast to Walcha via Thunderbolts Way.
Tip for stylish motorcycle riding: Apply a little more moustache wax if you’re wearing an open face helmet. Don’t slouch or tailgate.
Why do you like riding? It’s the closest I can get to flying in my dreams.
