Untersberg mountain, Salzburg

Untersberg is the prominent northern spur of the Berchtesgaden Alps, straddling the border between Berchtesgaden, Germany and Salzburg, Austria. Its distinctive, lopsided peak gained international fame for its role in the movie The Sound of Music. Several trails lead to the top, although most visitors take the eight and a half minute journey via the Untersbergbahn cable car. At the top you are rewarded with sweeping district views of the Salzburg Lake District and ice-capped Hohen Tauern mountains. The summit area offers a number of relatively easy walking trails and a restaurant for refreshments. Dress warm as it at least five degrees cooler at the summit than in Salzburg and the wind can be chilly.
