TSS Earnslaw, Queenstown

The TSS Earnslaw is a vintage paddle steamer that has been operating on Lake Wakatipu in the mountain town of Queenstown, New Zealand since 1912. The twin-screw steamer was built in Dunedin, dismantled and then transported to Kingston at the southern end of lake. The TSS Earnslaw is a coal burning paddle steamer produces a thick black smoke from its funnel, creating a sharp contrast with the pristine environment of Queenstown. There were plans to scrap the Earnslaw in 1968, however, the ‘Lady of the Lake’ was spared due of her historic value. Today, this well maintained ship acts as a tourist vessel shuttling visitors on a stunningly beautiful return cruise up the lake.
